About the role
Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Temporary part-time Technical Specialist - Distribution to join our dynamic Collections Operations Ont team.
The Distribution team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by providing technical expertise to South Central Ontario Supply Chain and to hospital customers in the management and use of blood and blood products. In this role, you are responsible for developing key relationships with external hospital representatives and members of the Healthcare Community.
Formula for success

Following Canadian Blood Services' Standard Operating Procedures and Good Manufacturing Practices, you will receive and store blood and fractionation products and maintain stock of distribution supplies.

Drawing on your knowledge and training of laboratory safety practices, you will ensure the safety of blood products through an ongoing monitoring of product and product storage equipment (temperature, humidity variations, etc.) as well as performing recalls and removing outdated products.

With your communication skills, you will issue blood and related products to our customers such as Provincial Hospitals and other blood centers and communicate with hospital teams about orders placed as required.

Utilizing your organization and time management skills, you will perform batching and packing of orders by priority and time of delivery to ensure compliance within established parameters for time and temperature limits during transit.
Desired education and skills
- Post-secondary level education in a relevant discipline from a recognized academic institution, preferably with a specialty in Transfusion Medicine or Immunohematology.
- Registration with the appropriate provincial licensing body for Medical Laboratory Technologists is required.
- Five years of relevant laboratory experience in transfusion medicine is required.
- Well versed in current Transfusion Medicine practices and trends. Specific knowledge of blood and blood product utilization is required.
- Effective leadership and interpersonal skills demonstrated through communication and coaching.
- Initiative and ability to work independently and as a member of a team member in a multi-disciplinary and rapidly changing environment.
- Strong organizational, analytical and effective problem-solving skills are essential.
- A proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers at all levels.
- Experience working in a regulated GMP environment is an advantage

What you can expect

Shifts/hours – must be flexible to accommodate assigned shifts which are based on operational needs; length of shifts varies according to the event which takes place at Canadian Blood Services. Shifts include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and statutory holidays.

Physical requirements – manual dexterity, ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, lift and carry weight up to 10 kg (22 lbs.)
This position must meet the Trustworthiness and Reliability Verification requirements of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and is subject to criminal records and employment verification checks.
