About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Temporary full-time Medical Laboratory Technologist to join our dynamic Testing team. 

 

The Testing team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by performing routine testing, as well as other relevant lab duties. In this role, you will be responsible for accessioning, testing, interpreting and reporting all results, management of blood and blood component inventory and post-production component processing and preparation of reagents and equipment for daily use. You will perform these duties in accordance with all Canadian Blood Services Operating Procedures and manufacturer’s instructions. 

Formula for success

  • Accession patient samples for testing.
  • Perform testing procedures.
  • Report patient results.
  • Receive and prepare reagents or reagent kits for testing.
  • Prepare laboratory equipment for routine operation.
  • Occasionally assist with training of staff, student technologists and other health care professionals as required.
  • Extended periods (2 or more hours duration) of sitting, standing, walking and lifting supplies and equipment that may exceed 10 kg throughout the course of the regular work schedule.

Desired education and skills

  • Graduate of an approved Medical Laboratory Technology training program with attained certification or eligibility for certification by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) is required.
  • Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) is required, or eligible to obtain registration. 
  • A minimum of one year experience in a Transfusion Medicine and Molecular related laboratory is preferred.
  • General knowledge of hospital and various laboratory policies and procedures, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), is required.
    OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional working relationships with departmental staff, management, volunteers, customers, and the general public.
  • Competency in the use of Laboratory software, computers within a Windows operating system using Microsoft Word, Excel, and e-mail software.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Displays telephone etiquette and maintains high professional standards.
  • Demonstrates good listening skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions, document work and assume responsibility for own work.
