About the Role

Canadian Blood Services if looking for a regular part-time Laboratory Assistant Team Lead to join our dynamic Supply Chain Operations West Team in Calgary

 

The Testing team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by performing routine and extensive testing. These testing services help ensure a safe and secure blood supply that protects donors and recipients. every uit is tested so we can ensure a safe supply chain to every patient. In this role , you will be responsible for the supervision and performance of routine sample receiving and preparation of donor samples for Donor Testing. You will also be responsible for assisting testing staff, under the guidance of a certified technologist, in testing related activities, including para-technical duties, instrument maintenance, cleaning of equipment and glassware, inventory management, reagent preparation, sample management and records management. You will maintain and provide excellent customer service to both internal and external customers, promote continuous learning and participate in ongoing quality improvement activities.

 

Formula for success

  • Leveraging your attention to detail, you will receive, inspect, store and prepare donor samples.
  • Applying your knowledge, you will operate equipment required in the sample preparation process, perform routine equipment operation and maintenance as well as manual procedures and activities.
  • Drawing on your organizational skills, you will ensure all required documentation is accurate, complete and follows Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • With accuracy, you will prepare reagents and controls for all testing platforms and manual procedures.
  • Utilizing your inventory management skills, you will maintain adequate stock of supplies, assist with inventory counting and ordering, and receive and inspect supply shipments.
  • Applying your interpersonal skills, you will maintain and provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers and promote continuous learning.
  • With a contiuous improvement mindset, you will participate in continuing education and ensure Laboratory Assistant training is kept up to date, performing training as required.

 

Desired education and skills

  • Successful completion of Secondary School.
  • Graduate from a certified Medical Laboratory Assistant training program,
    • and/or Foreign trained Medical Laboratory Technologist with experience who does not have registered status in Canada.
    • and/or formal education or equivalent post-secondary education applicable to a medical laboratory and one-year laboratory work experience.
  • Previous Good Manufacturing Practices experience preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to organize workload effectively.
  • Ability to supervise and teach/train.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
