About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular part-time Laboratory Assistant - Production to join our dynamic Supply Chain Operations East team. 

 

The Supply Chain Operations East team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by processing the whole blood collections to the final product and the distribution of these products to the customers of Canadian Blood Services. In this role, you will be working on the frontlines, assisting in the production of blood components that provide life-saving treatments for Canadians.

Formula for success

  • Drawing on your knowledge and experience in laboratory functions, you will be processing blood components such as platelet concentrates, fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitate, recovered plasma, concentrated red cells and cryosupernatant plasma from whole blood and apheresis donations
  • Utilizing your knowledge and understanding of blood component production, you will be issuing blood products to Public Health and outside agencies for Quality Control, as well as issue blood and related products to our customers such as Provincial Hospitals and other blood centres, etc
  • Using your excellent organizational skills, you will be maintaining stock of supplies in component laboratory including fractionation products, red blood cells, and platelets
  • Using your attention to detail you will be involved in the maintenance of appropriate documentation and records related to inventory in compliance with Canadian Blood Services operational procedures and work instructions.
  • Applying your ability to be proactive and ensure excellence, you will be performing routine maintenance of equipment and work areas to ensure safety and quality of blood products and maintaining temperature records of laboratory equipment.
     

Desired education and skills

  • Completion of secondary education and minimum 1 year laboratory work experience or an equivalent combination.  BSc or College Diploma would be considered an asset.
  • Technical skills including MS Office, and relevant computer skills may be required.
  • Must have good oral and written communications skills.

What you can expect

  • Shifts/hours will vary. You must be flexible to accommodate assigned shifts which are based on operational needs. Shifts include days, evenings, overnights, weekends and statutory holidays.  Shifts will be assigned 4-6 weeks in advance.  Typically 0600 - 1400, 0700 -1500, 0800 - 1600, 0600 - 1600, 0900 - 1700, 1600 - 2400 depending on operational requirements. 
  • Physical requirements for the role include the ability to lift weights up to 10 kg (22 lbs).
