About the role
Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular Full-Time Analyst - Systems III (Senior Infrastructure Engineer) to join our dynamic IT Infrastructure Operations and Delivery team in Ottawa. 
 
The IT Infrastructure Operations & Delivery team is responsible for managing and maintaining Canadian Blood Services’ IT infrastructure to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of its technology systems.

Reporting to the Manager, Data Centre Services, you will serve as an Analyst - Systems III, providing advanced technical and operational support for enterprise application and operating systems across remote "on-premises" and cloud environments. You will ensure, performance optimization, high availability, disaster recovery, and infrastructure reliability while maintaining secure, compliant, and high-performing systems that support Canadian Blood Services’ operations.

 

Formula for Success

  • Applying your skills in Platform Engineering & Operations you will design, implement, and support infrastructure platforms across on-premises and Azure environments, ensuring stability, scalability, and operational excellence.
  • Drawing your skills in Infrastructure Reliability & Performance you will monitor and optimize system performance, proactively identifying issues and ensuring high availability across critical platforms.
  • Applying your skills in Database Platform Support (Non-Primary DBA), you will support and maintain database environments (Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL) including provisioning, basic performance tuning, patching, and participation in migrations.
  • Using your skills in High Availability & Disaster Recovery, you will assist in design, implementation and maintaining resilient architectures including backup, failover, and disaster recovery capabilities.
  • Employing your skills in Automation & DevOps Practices, you will develop and maintain automation for provisioning, configuration management, and operational tasks using scripting and Infrastructure-as-Code.
  • Building in your skill in Security & Compliance, you will apply security best practices across platforms, including access controls, patching, and alignment with organizational standards.
  • Demonstrating your skills in technical leadership and collaboration, you will mentor team members, contribute to infrastructure modernization initiatives, produce technical documentation and reports, and support a 24×7 operational environment including on-call rotation.

 

Desired education and skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field
  • 5–7+ years of experience in infrastructure/platform engineering
  • Hands-on experience in hybrid environments, including Microsoft Azure
  • Operating Systems - Linux (RHEL), MS Windows Server, exposure to AIX is an asset
  • Infrastructure & Virtualization - VMware, IBM Power Systems (PowerVM/VIOS exposure is an asset), enterprise compute and storage platforms
  • Database Exposure (Support Level) - Experience supporting Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or similar platforms (backup/recovery, patching, basic tuning, and troubleshooting),
  • Exposure to enterprise database high-availability configurations (e.g., RAC, Always On)
  • Experience with containers (Docker/Kubernetes)
  • Automation & Tooling - Scripting (PowerShell, Python, Bash) and Infrastructure-as-Code concepts
  • Backup & Recovery - Experience with enterprise backup solutions (e.g., NetBackup, Cohesity)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with demonstrated ability to mentor and support cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, operational environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills across technical and business audiences, ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced operational environment, and solid understanding of ITIL and project management best practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with demonstrated ability to mentor and support cross-functional teams.
    Certifications (preferred): VMware Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, Microsoft Active Directory, Windows, Unix, AIX, HP-Ux, RHEL, HPE Compute and Storage, Microsoft CDCP, Data Center Foundation
  • Experience with ITIL-based support environments

What you can expect  

  • This role operates in a hybrid work environment, with a requirement to be onsite at a Canadian Blood Services location at least 40% of the time (approximately 2 days per week).
  • The regular work schedule is Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week (7.5 hours per day).
  • Occasional lifting of equipment up to 30 lbs may be required.
  • Participation in a 24/7 operational support model, including on-call rotation, is required.
