Please note this role will work in a hybrid environment. The successful candidate will be working at one of our Canadian Blood Services major site offices in Ottawa (1800 Alta Vista Drive) OR Toronto (67 College Street) and will be working a mixture of on-site and off-site work based on the parameters for our operations to meet the needs of our donors, our staff and our communities. Currently, employees are expected to have an in-person presence for at least 40% of their work time. This requirement may vary depending upon circumstances.

About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular full-time Director, Sustainability, Strategy Planning and Integration to join our dynamic Inclusion Sustainability and Engagement (ISE) team.

 

The Inclusion Sustainability and Engagement team works to ensure Canadian Blood Services is a leader in inclusion, sustainability and engagement, best positioning us to be prepared for the ever changing present and future. It stewards natural intersections between our social impact and our purpose — identifying and removing barriers to inclusion and belonging within Canada’s Lifeline.

 

In this role, you will play a key role in the advancement and integration of ISE-led initiatives into the day-to-day operations of Canadian Blood Services and ensuring visibility at the Executive level. You will lead a series of strategic planning and integration management activities for the ISE division. These responsibilities include:

    • Provide leadership to the ISE division on strategy planning, execution, reporting, and risk management, and facilitate the annual development of key focus area plans.
    • Develop and facilitate the annual division planning processes, including the development of annual goals, measures, performance plans and budgets.
    • Facilitate integration activities within the division and with other Canadian Blood Services divisions in support of corporate integrated planning processes to ensure execution of key strategic and operational priorities.
    • Support the Vice President of ISE in the area of issue management and executive committee support, including issues identification, analyses and development of recommendations.
    • Lead the portfolio management processes within the division, including the development of proposals and business cases.
    • Lead and direct division project managers assigned to strategic initiatives to ensure compliance to corporate project and change management processes and achievement of intended benefits.

 

There are two specific strategic areas that you will have functional oversight of – the sustainability framework and the reconciliation action plan. You will oversee all phases of the annual sustainability reporting cycle and be accountable for advancing enterprise-wide collaboration with the Vice-President, ISE, that drives towards progress of our sustainability commitments. You will, with the support of the team and VP, ISE, also oversee the evolution and advancement of Canadian Blood Services’ Reconciliation Action Plan.

Formula for success

  • Leveraging your demonstrated knowledge and expertise, you will own the division planning, execution and reporting process. Identify risk and issues to executing strategy, work with ISE leadership to resolve roadblocks and escalate to vice-president as required.
  • Drawing on your excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, you will lead the creation of all planning documents, including Key Focus Area plans, Division Annual Plans and Priorities, quarterly performance and risk reports. Work with ISE leadership to identify budget requirements and recommend modifications at a division and/ or program level to address surpluses or deficits to vice-president.
  • Utilizing your exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, you will maintain constructive relationships with all departments within the division to achieve results; member of the corporate Integrated Planning Working Group to ensure cross-corporate collaboration in executing corporate priorities.
  • Harnessing your highly strategic and forward-thinking approach, you will own the portfolio and project management processes within the ISE division, including guidance on corporate practice and reporting requirements. Prepare quarterly project performance reports. Provide leadership in identifying and mitigating risks to installation and realization of benefits and liaise with division leadership and other divisional portfolio leads as required.
  • Focusing on your exceptional leadership and coordination skills, you will be responsible for providing leadership and guidance to division projects. Direct project management resources to ensure projects remain on track and focused.
  • Concentrating on your strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize and meet deadlines, you will be responsible for recommending agenda content, support leads in preparation of all required committee materials, e.g., briefing notes, presentation content, and follows up on open action items.
  • Applying your ability to identify risks and issues, evaluate options and provide recommendations, you will analyze issues and opportunities, prepare supporting documentation, such as white papers, environmental scans, proposals and business cases to outline options and recommendations. Ensure varying opinions are included in assessments.
  • Using your ability to lead and work collaboratively across a diverse team, you will manage a team of skilled resources; responsible for setting performance goals, monitoring performance and ensuring development plans are identified and executed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Desired education and skills

  • University level in a relevant discipline from a recognized institution; a Master Business Administration or equivalent degree is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of project management, portfolio management and change management processes. Project management certification is considered an asset.
  • 10 years of progressive experience at the leadership level in the area of business management, planning, strategy formulation and execution.
  • Must possess strong written and verbal communications skills, including presentation delivery.
  • Experience in leading sustainability initiatives at the leadership level is considered an asset.
  • Experience in leading initiatives that advance reconciliation at the leadership level is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate Indigenous-led insights into organizational strategy.
  • Skilled relationship-builder who centres trust, reciprocity, and humility.
  • Ability to exercise cultural sensitivity, empathy and be trauma-informed when interacting with community partners and stakeholders.
  • Specific experience in strategy and financial analysis is an asset.
  • Proven capabilities in leading large-scale initiatives.
  • Proven customer relationship management skills with a strong ability to manage internal relationships. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

  • This role will work in a hybrid environment with requirements to be onsite at Canadian Blood Services location 40% of the time/2 days of the week.
  • You may be required to travel a couple of times per year.
