Please note this role will work in a hybrid environment. The successful candidate must be located near a Canadian Blood Services site and will be working a mixture of on-site and off-site work based on the parameters for our operations to meet the needs of our donors, our staff and our communities. Currently, employees are expected to have an in-person presence for at least 40% of their work time. This requirement may vary depending upon circumstances.

About the role
Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular full-time Facilities Planner to join our dynamic Strategic Facilities Management and Business Integration team.


The Strategic Facilities Management and Business Integration team is responsible for ensuring effective integration and accountability in providing facility infrastructure management and property services, supporting various workloads, stakeholders, and programs.

As the Facilities Planner you will be responsible for leading strategic oversight and technical direction to support efficient space planning within Canadian Blood Services’ facilities. This role focuses on optimizing the functionality, use, accessibility, and comfort of spaces; and planning new spaces to control capital and operating costs, intensifying utilization, promoting sustainability, and maintaining flexibility to meet future programming and operational needs. 


You will support the organization’s goals in the development and implementation of strategies to optimize existing assets, space guidelines and policies, general space programs, feasibility studies, functional programs, and business cases as needed. You will work cross-functionally with the organizations’ various business groups and capital and operating project teams to develop and align national facilities design standards with the organization’s corporate brand and reputation, as well as to achieve its strategic objectives, priorities, commitments, and values.


Formula for success

  • Leveraging your expertise in building documentation and collaborative partnerships, you will maintain the quality and accuracy of information on the allocation and utilization of spaces at Canadian Blood Services with building documentation and drawings in partnership with Facilities Operations.
  • Applying your skills in project evaluation and regulatory compliance, you will review and evaluate assigned and emerging space planning projects within the CBS facilities design standards framework, space guidelines, building code, and accessibility guidelines.
  • Utilizing your knowledge of health and safety policies, you will perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Canadian Blood Services’ Corporate Health and Safety Policies and Procedures and ensure that employees are aware of and comply with all the Corporate Health and Safety Policies and Procedures as applicable.
  • Harnessing your expertise in operational planning and design, you will support the execution of operational relocations, moves, and other space planning initiatives and projects to create efficient, functional, and attractive interior spaces while taking into account the safety and wellbeing of the people using the spaces.
  • Drawing on your experience in branding strategies and environmental design, you will support the successful implementation of branding strategies for sites as required, considering all aspects of the built environment.
  • Building on your skills in occupancy data management and strategic planning, you will develop and maintain occupancy data analytics in preparation to drive solutions to optimize the facilities portfolio for short- and long-term space planning.
  • Performs other related duties as required.


Desired education and skills

  • Post-secondary education in architectural technology, interior design, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Accreditation in Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO), Ontario Associate of Architects (OAA), or equivalent is an asset.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience.
  • General management and leadership experience, with the ability to foster an engaged, high-performance team environment.
  • Change management training/experience is an asset.
  • Experience in participating in complex projects is preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of relevant legislation, building codes, accessibility regulations, and industry best practices in space planning.
  • Proficiency in Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, and working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, or similar 3D modeling software

What you can expect 

  • This role will work in a hybrid environment with requirements to be onsite at a Canadian Blood Services location 40% of the time/2 days of the week. 
  • You will work Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week, 7.5 hours per day.  
  • Travel Requirements: Travel to other Canadian Blood Services locations across Canada may be required on a need-to basis for site visits, meetings, or events.
