Please note this role will work in a hybrid environment. The successful candidate will be working at our Ottawa head office (1800 Alta Vista Drive) and will be working a mixture of on-site and off-site work based on the parameters for our operations to meet the needs of our donors, our staff and our communities. Currently, employees are expected to have an in-person presence for at least 40% of their work time. This requirement may vary depending upon circumstances.

About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a (3-Year) Temporary Full-Time Manager, Financial Reporting to join our dynamic Financial Reporting and Services team in ourFinance and Corporate Services division. 

 

The Financial Reporting and Services team delivers timely, high-quality financial reporting to Canadians, the Board, and funders, supporting transparency, public trust, and effective financial management. It safeguards public funds by ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and compliance of financial systems, processes, and reporting. 

 

The Manager, Financial Reporting will combine technical accounting expertise with strong leadership and collaboration skills to ensure transparency, accuracy, and excellence in our external financial reporting. 

 

In this key leadership position, you will oversee the planning, organization, and delivery of external financial reporting activities for Canadian Blood Services. Your work will directly support our accountability to a wide range of stakeholders, including provincial and territorial governments, our Board of Directors, and the Canadian public. 

Formula for success

  • Lead external financial reporting for the organization, including management discussion and analysis (MD&A), annual and quarterly reporting, and presentations to boards and committees. 
  • Oversee financial statement preparation (non-consolidated and consolidated), ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards — including the consolidation of captive insurance company results. 
  • Manage a high-performing team of senior financial analysts, fostering collaboration, professional growth, and a culture of continuous improvement. 
  • Lead accounting research and policy development, producing clear, well-reasoned position papers on complex accounting matters. 
  • Coordinate and manage external audits, maintaining effective relationships and ensuring timely resolution of key accounting and reporting issues. 
  • Oversee the membership billing process, assessing the financial impacts of business changes and maintaining strong partnerships with provincial and territorial members. 
  • Collaborate closely with treasury and other finance teams to ensure alignment across all external financial activities. 

Desired education and skills

Education & Credentials: 

  • A CPA designation and deep knowledge of accounting standards and external reporting requirements. 

Professional Experience: 

  • Minimum of 6 years of progressive experience in accounting, auditing, or external financial reporting. 
  • Demonstrated success managing financial reporting teams in complex or large organizations. 
  • Audit experience (public practice or internal) is a strong asset. 

Technical Expertise: 

  • Comprehensive knowledge of financial accounting and reporting under GAAP, including ASPE and IFRS. 
  • Broad understanding of advanced accounting principles, accounting systems, analytical processes, internal controls, and financial reporting frameworks. 
  • Experience with pension and benefits accounting considered an asset.

  • Proven ability to lead and inspire teams, fostering a collaborative, high-performance culture. 
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen eye for accuracy and detail. 
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to distill complex financial information into clear, actionable insights. 
  • A continuous improvement mindset, consistently seeking opportunities to enhance efficiency, quality, and cross-functional collaboration.
