Please note this role will work in a hybrid environment. The successful candidate must be located near a Canadian Blood Services site and will be working a mixture of on-site and off-site work based on the parameters for our operations to meet the needs of our donors, our staff and our communities. Currently, employees are expected to have an in-person presence for at least 40% of their work time. This requirement may vary depending upon circumstances.

About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Temporary full-time Project Portfolio Manager, Network Centre for Applied Development to join the Network Centre for Applied Development (NetCAD) team within the dynamic Innovation and Portfolio Management group of Medical Affairs and Innovation (MAI) division.

 

The NetCAD team is responsible for supporting product and process development for fresh blood components and providing blood to researchers through the Blood4Research program. 

 

The Project Portfolio Manager will report to the NetCAD Associate Director and is responsible for managing both the fresh blood portfolio of product and process development projects and the team of NetCAD Project Leads. In addition, the Project Portfolio Manager is responsible for providing technical, scientific and project management expertise to product and process development projects and may at times also be required to take on the Project Lead role for technically and/or organizationally complex development projects.

Formula for success

  • Participate in corporate product development and change roadmap strategy development activities.
  • Translate and incorporate corporate roadmaps and supply chain operational needs into the NetCAD roadmap of development projects. Ensure all development projects in the portfolio are well defined with clarity of ownership, scope and deliverables.
  • Maintain the development project portfolio database and ensure it reflects the current status of all projects in the portfolio. Report on the status of the development project portfolio, including timelines, risks and identification of resource conflicts.
  • Lead development project portfolio review meetings with the NetCAD Management, Development Scientist, and Project Lead teams and stakeholders as appropriate to ensure alignment and integration between and across development projects as well as highlight and resolve issues and resource conflicts in a timely fashion.
  • Work with the NetCAD Management team and project owners to ensure effective 2-way communication between the group and key project stakeholders ensuring all parties are kept up to date on project plans and progress, risks and mitigations, as well as scheduling changes and associated impacts on the portfolio of development projects.
  • Recruit all Project Leads in the NetCAD group. Ensure the roles and responsibilities of all staff are clearly defined. Set performance plans that cascade from corporate, divisional, department and group objectives. Regularly review staff performance and provide support when working in a matrix environment.
  • Stay abreast of the latest technical and scientific literature by attending/participating in technical and scientific symposia and conferences.
  • Provide expertise and support in the design and preparation of development studies, study protocols, project work plans, data analysis, technical reports, conference abstracts and presentations, and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • Critically review study designs, study protocols, project work plans, data analysis, technical reports, conference abstracts and presentations, and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • Provide expertise and support in the review of completed projects, identify lessons learned, and incorporate into the practices and tools used for the management of development projects.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Desired education and skills

  • Post-secondary level education in a relevant discipline from a recognized academic institution, preferably a Bachelor of Science Degree in a life sciences field.
  • Training or certification in project management or portfolio management is preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
  • A minimum of 10 years of related experience, preferably project experience in an R&D environment.
  • Above average written and verbal communication skills, particularly in a technical and scientific environment.
  • Experience in blood and blood component manufacturing is preferred.
  • Experience working in and managing staff in a matrix environment is desirable.
  • Knowledge of product and process development methodologies.
  • Knowledge of project and risk management concepts.

  • This role will work in a hybrid environment with requirements to be onsite at Canadian Blood Services location 40% of the time.
  • You may be required to travel monthly or every two months for this role, and as required to support development projects and continuing education requirements.
