About the role
Canadian Blood Services is looking for a regular full-time Research Assistant to join our dynamic Innovation & Portfolio Management team at our head office on 1800 Alta Vista Drive, Ottawa, Ontario. Reporting into our Product and Development (2PD) Ottawa Group, the Research Assistant will participate in Innovation and 2PD projects by performing various technical tasks and analysis.
Formula for success
• Drawing on your knowledge and experience, you will plan, conduct and troubleshoot experiments utilizing a variety of laboratory equipment, techniques and procedures. You will also prepare common reagents and solutions.
• Focusing on your excellent attention to detail, you will perform data analysis, prepare result summaries and present findings.
• Using your strong communication and presentation skills, you communicate summarized data and presentation in person in meetings. You will prepare and help in the writing of documents.
• Using your excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills, you will participate in laboratory meetings and discussions.
• You will be in charge of keeping biological inventories up to date.
• Through your strong organization skills, you will help manage day to day operation of laboratory.
• You will be required to provide administrative assistance such as order laboratory supplies, keeps laboratory and equipment in good working order, get quotes and pay invoices.
• Share your personal strong research experience by providing technical training and assistance to existing and new staff members. Provide laboratory supervision to trainees.
• Maintains laboratory records following standard good manufacturing procedures.
• Pursue continuous technical and knowledge improvements through literature review.
• Keep detailed and accessible records of all experimental conditions procedures and results.
Desired education and skills
• A Bachelor of Science degree is mandatory. Preferably a Master’s degree from a Canadian University in immunology, biochemistry, cellular and molecular medicine or related program. PhD graduate will also be considered.
• A minimum of four years of related laboratory experience is required. MSc and PhD studies will be considered as work experience.
• Previous lab management experience will be considered an asset.
• Extensive experience with cell cultures and advanced multi-color flow cytometry will be considered assets. Expertise in stem cell research, cellular and molecular biology are some of the preferred fields of expertise.
• Immunology background is desirable.
• Possess attention to detail.
• Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
• Previous peer reviewed publications in hematology or immunology will be considered an asset.
• You must be willing to work flexible hours as necessary.
• Good English communication and personal organization is required.
• You will exhibit individual initiative and be able to work independently.
• Effectively communicate in both written reports and presentations.

What you can expect
- You will work Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week, 7.5 hours a day, additional hours may be required depending on project requirements.
