Please note this role will work in a hybrid environment. The successful candidate must be located near a Canadian Blood Services site and will be working a mixture of on-site and off-site work based on the parameters for our operations to meet the needs of our donors, our staff and our communities. Currently, employees are expected to have an in-person presence for at least 40% of their work time. This requirement may vary depending upon circumstances.

About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular Full-Time Security Operations Specialist to join our dynamic IT Strategy & Governance team.

The IT Strategy & Governance team is responsible for ensuring that Canadian Blood Service's technology resources are used effectively and align with its overall business goals.


In this role, you will lead and implement security solutions and operations within the IT infrastructure, working closely with the IT Security Team to analyze, configure, test, implement, and support IT security solutions for Canadian Blood Services. In addition, you will be responsible for integrating these security solutions into the environment and developing run books and IT operational processes to ensure consistency and efficiency.

  • Leveraging your expertise in information security, you will provide subject matter guidance while implementing, maintaining, supporting, and developing an information security architecture that aligns with Canadian Blood Services IT Architecture principles.
  • Applying your skills in security engineering, you will design, implement, maintain, analyse, and administer Canadian Blood Services security technologies.
  • Utilizing your knowledge of security devices, you will implement, monitor, maintain, and support technologies including firewalls, load balancers, VPN, Microsoft security certificate servers, Entrust, and Identification and Authentication services, as well as manage Canadian Blood Services SSL certificates and renewals.
  • Drawing on your experience in project leadership, you will participate in and lead projects related to security requirements, network design reviews, and security testing for Canadian Blood Services networks, systems, and other IT teams.
  • Leveraging your organisational skills, you will maintain up-to-date inventories of security devices and associated maintenance support contracts.
  • Employing your resource management expertise, you will make arrangements to obtain external resources when required, including preparing statements of work and other necessary documentation.
  • Using your skills in procurement and business analysis, you will participate in RFQ, RFI, RFP, SIP, and business case development.

 

Desired education and skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or similar field.
  • 10+ years of information security experience with a focus on network security, application security and architecture.
  • 5+ years of security operations experience with security monitoring and incident response.
  • Specific Information Security related experience including encryption, IDS/IPS, Firewalls, SEIMs and Log Management, syslog analysis, HTTP and TCP/IP analysis, and vulnerability assessment.
  • Knowledge of email security gateway, cloud and virtual technologies.
  • In-depth knowledge of mapping business requirements to technology and ability to identify security gaps at the architecture level.
  • Knowledge of common security vulnerabilities such as: XSS/CSRF, SQL Injection, Buffer Overflow, and DoS attacks.
  • Knowledge of the HTTP protocol, including analyzing the request/response.
  • Demonstrated experience with commercial and open source testing and auditing tools such as Paros, BURP, nmap, and Metasploit.
  • Technical certifications and security certifications such as CCNA, CCIE, GIAC certs, CISSP or CISM Security certification are desirable.
  • Knowledge of F5 LTM/ASM.
  • Knowledge of Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI).

What you can expect 

  • This role will work in a hybrid environment with requirements to be onsite at a Canadian Blood Services location 40% of the time/2 days of the week.
  • You will work Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week, 7.5 hours per day.  
  • If you are located outside of Ottawa, you may be expected to travel to our office location in Ottawa – 2540 Lancaster Rd, Ottawa, Ontario, quarterly for in-person team meetings when required.
