About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Senior Financial Analyst to join our Financial Accounting Team.   In this role you will require a strong understanding of financial concepts, principles and applications and possesses the ability to analyze, investigate, prepare and present complex accounting issues in a clear and concise manner. In addition, you must be able to redesign and implement more efficient and robust processes while improving the quality CBS’ internal and external reporting and controls.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Gains an overall knowledge of all program activities in the business.
  • Prepares high-quality annual external financial statements and related note disclosures and acts as the key contact for the annual audit.
  • Performs the month-end close, including preparation of the monthly non-consolidated and quarterly consolidated financial statements as well as strong value-added financial analysis targeted for executive management and Board presentation.
  • Leads the financial accounting close process, including development of a financial close guide and coordination across several departments of Canadian Blood Services.  
  • Provides financial accounting expertise in external financial reporting (ASPE and IFRS), writes related accounting position papers and communicates issues and recommendations appropriately to the target audience.
  • Actively seeks to continuously improve processes and reporting with an objective of ensuring optimal levels of controls, availability of value added information, process efficiencies and strong financial performance.
  • Develops and maintains external relationships with funding members, auditors, and actuaries.
  • Owns the preparation, coordination, and oversight of all reporting to funding members, ensuring compliance with accountability agreements/directives or other governance documents and ensures all levels of review are planned for and executed.
  • Reviews and recommends changes to financial policies and provides guidance on the interpretation and implementation of these policies.
  • Oversight and review of reporting related to the CBS pension plans and captive insurance companies.
  • Leads other financial accounting projects, works on special projects and related duties as required.

Education, Training and Experience

  • Post-secondary education in a relevant discipline and an accounting designation (CA, CMA, or CGA) is required.
  • 5 years or more of relevant experience.
  • Audit experience is preferred.
  • Expertise in pension and benefits accounting is an asset.
  • Broad knowledge of advanced accounting principles, accounting systems, analytical functions, internal controls, and financial reporting processes is required.
  • An understanding, ability and willingness to leverage technology to improve our processes.

Demonstrated Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Comprehensive understanding of financial accounting and reporting under GAAP (ASPE and IFRS) is required. 
  • Ability to summarize financial information and highlight salient points in simple terms.
  • High level of proficiency with spreadsheets and reporting writing software is expected.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team is required.
  • Understanding and experience in the use of SAP or an equivalent ERP application is required or a strong technology acumen to allow for a quick learning curve.
  • Knowledge of TM1 reporting would be considered an asset.
