About the role
Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular Full-Time Systems Analyst III (Database Infrastructure Analyst) to join our dynamic IT Infrastructure Operations and Delivery Team in Ottawa. 

 
The  IT Infrastructure Operations & Delivery team is responsible for managing and maintaining Canadian Blood Services’ IT infrastructure to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of its technology systems.


In this role, you will manage and optimize a diverse database ecosystem that includes Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Azure-based databases. You will be responsible for installing, configuring, and maintaining databases while ensuring optimal performance, security, and high availability across both on-premise and cloud environments. Leveraging your hands-on experience with these technologies, you will collaborate with cross-functional IT teams to deliver reliable, scalable, and high-performing database solutions.

 

Formula for Success

  • Applying your expertise in database administration, you will install, configure, patch, and upgrade databases for Oracle, MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Azure SQL services.
  • Utilizing your knowledge of clustering and replication technologies, you will manage, design, and implement high-availability (HA) setups such as Oracle RAC, MS SQL Always On, PostgreSQL clustering, and cloud-based solutions, while performing regular disaster recovery testing and ensuring backup strategies are secure and efficient.
  • Drawing on your strong troubleshooting abilities, you will resolve issues related to database installation, upgrades, performance, and high-availability configurations.
  • Harnessing your analytical skills, you will monitor and optimize database performance across all platforms; tuning queries, indexes, and stored procedures, and resolving performance bottlenecks at the database, query, and system levels.
  • Demonstrating your commitment to documentation, you will maintain comprehensive records for database systems, configurations, backup strategies, and troubleshooting procedures, and create internal technical knowledge bases and repositories for best practices.
  • Contributing your technical expertise, you will participate in IT projects as needed, assisting with research and evaluation of new technologies such as Storage Area Networks and Operating Systems.
  • Sharing your technical insight, you will offer guidance to colleagues on hardware and software standards, system architecture, and emerging industry developments.


Desired Education and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience as a Database Administrator with hands-on expertise in Oracle, MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL.
    • Deep experience managing Oracle (12c/19c/23c), including RAC, ASM, and Data Guard.
    • Skilled in PostgreSQL and MySQL administration, including tuning, clustering, and replication.
    • Proficient in managing MS SQL Server environments (Always On, Clustering, and replication).
  • 3+ years of experience with Azure SQL Database, Azure Managed Instances, and Azure Active Directory integration, including cloud-native management, performance tuning, and cost optimization.
  • Experience with database migration, high-availability setups, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Familiarity with tools like Azure Monitor, Azure SQL Analytics, and pgAdmin.
  • Strong SQL skills for query optimization, troubleshooting, and administration.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong attention to detail, with a proactive approach to system monitoring and continuous improvement.
  • Experience supporting a 24x7 operational environment, including shift work and participation in on-call rotations.

What you can expect  

  • This role will work in a hybrid environment with requirements to be onsite at a Canadian Blood Services location at least 40% of the time/2 days of the week.  
  • You will work Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week, 7.5 hours per day.
