About the role

 

The work of a Registered Nurse is integral to Canadian Blood Services role as Canada’s Lifeline. In this role, you will be performing duties related to the collection of blood (whole blood, autologous, directed, apheresis blood components), and sample collections as requested at permanent, mobile and satellite sites in a professional and courteous manner. You will be responsible for administrative support to all program activities within the Supply Chain Team. You will provide support in accordance with all regulations, standards and good manufacturing practice.  The successful incumbent performs assigned duties to assist in the collection of blood and blood products. 

 

Key responsibilities include:

 

  • Performs confidential donor health assessment and provides donor with information, instruction and advice on blood donation
  • Ensures collection equipment and supplies are adequate and in good working order
  • Performs venepuncture and operates collection device
  • Ensures the safety and comfort of donor/patient during and following collection
  • Guides and assists clinic staff and volunteers performing donor and product related activities
  • Ensures that all required documentation is carried out
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Current registration with SRNA
  • Two years active nursing experience
  • Previous venepuncture experience an asset
  • Nursing skills to effectively assess health status; to recognize and intervene in adverse and emergency situations and to implement a plan of care
  • Ability to effectively provide information and advice to donors on donation and health related issues
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively with the general public, health professionals, and other members of Canadian Blood Services
  • Ability to establish priorities and organize workload
  • Ability to help orientate, develop, and direct staff /volunteers
  • Ability to work under pressure and to meet the emotional demands of the job.
  • Current CPR and First Aid would be an asset

Additional Information: Shifts will be flexible as assigned; can include days, evenings, and weekends. Travel out-of-town to attend multi-day mobile donor centres is required, transportation and accommodation will be provided by Canadian Blood Services.
