About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Temporary full-time MLT - TFT to join our dynamic Testing team. 

 

In this role, you will be responsible for routine and complex serological testing including the running of automated equipment and the preparation and quality control of reagents in the reference and perinatal areas of the laboratory in accordance with all provincial laboratory accreditation and regulatory requirements and Canadian Blood Services policies, procedures and practices.

Formula for success

 

  • Drawing on your knowledge or experience in testing, you will perform red cell serological and perinatal routine and specialized tests in accordance with written operating procedures.
  • Utilizing your superior interpersonal and communication skills you will consult with hospital Transfusion Medicine Laboratories in the resolution of transfusion-related problems by being on-call to perform red cell antibody investigation procedures, and to perform other serological procedures as may be required for good customer service and in the resolution of a problem.
  • You will provide verbal and/or written results/consultation directly to the technical staff of Transfusion Medicine Laboratories and/or physician's offices.
  • You will prepare reagents required for the routine and specialized testing of red cell serological and perinatal samples.
  • Perform lot acceptance and quality control of reagents and tests in accordance with written operating procedures.
  • Harnessing your thoroughness, you will interpret and accurately record results and prepare reports.  Review worksheets and reports and check transcriptions to ensure accuracy and validity of results.
  • Support the Technical Supervisor in implementing new procedures by conducting evaluations and test as well as review literature to evaluate equipment, reagents, and procedures.
  • Stay updated in Medical Laboratory Technology - Immunohematology to recommend new applications and enhance technical activities by attending approved course and lectures or conducting in-house case study lectures.

Desired education and skills

  • Medical Technology Certification with eligibility for registration or membership with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
  • Minimum two (2) years of recent related Immunohematology experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, or recently graduated from an accredited school for Medical Laboratory Science.
  • Technical skills and demonstrated knowledge relevant to procedures performed in the Diagnostic Services Laboratory.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment, including computerized equipment.
  • Critical and creative thinking is a must.

What you can expect

 

  • Shifts/Hours:  Monday to Friday 07:00 - 15:00, 08:00 - 16:00, 09:00 - 17:00 rotational.  On call approximately every couple months, depending on operational requirements.
  • Rest days are Saturday and Sunday.
