About the role

 

The work of MLT II is integral to Canadian Blood Services role as Canada’s Lifeline. In this role, you will perform technical duties in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Centre Operating Procedures (COPs).

 

Formula for success

 

  • Performs red cell serological and perinatal routine and specialized tests in accordance with written operating procedures.
  • Consults with hospital Transfusion Medicine Laboratories in the resolution of transfusion-related problems by being on-call to perform red cell antibody investigation procedures, and to perform other serological procedures as may be required for good customer service and in the resolution of a problem.
  • Provides verbal and/or written results/consultation directly to the technical staff of Transfusion Medicine Laboratories and/or physician's offices.
  • Prepare reagents required for the routine and specialized testing of red cell serological and perinatal samples.
  • Performs lot acceptance and quality control of reagents and tests in accordance with written operating procedures.
  • Interprets and accurately records results and prepares reports. Reviews worksheets and reports and checks transcriptions to ensure accuracy and validity of results. Requests retesting or additional testing procedures and notifies Technical Supervisor, Diagnostic Services or designate of problems or discrepancies.
  • Performs routine maintenance of equipment and monitoring of equipment as required. Reports malfunctioning equipment to the Technical Supervisor, Diagnostic Services or designate.
  • Assists the Technical Supervisor, Diagnostic Services or designate, with the implementation of new procedures by performing evaluations and tests as requested.
  • Assists with and/or performs evaluations of equipment, reagents, and new procedures by review of current literature.
  • Maintains current knowledge in the field of Medical Laboratory Technology - Immunohematology, in order to recommend new applications and contribute to improvement in technical activities by attending courses and lectures as approved or performing in-house case study lectures as requested.
  • Performs work in accordance with the provisions of the Canadian Blood Services' Corporate Health and Safety Policies and Procedures, and comply with all the Corporate Health and Safety Policies and Procedures. Ensures ongoing monitoring and reporting of all occupational health and safety issues in the workplace.

 

Desired education and skills

 

  • Medical Technology Certification with eligibility for registration or membership with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
  • Two (2) years of recent related Immunohematology experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, or recently graduated from an accredited school for Medical Laboratory Science. 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize workload and set priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment, including computerized equipment.
  • Demonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the job.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and technical competence relevant to procedures performed in the Diagnostic Services Laboratory.
  • Demonstrated ability to keep abreast of new developments and technology.

What you can expect

 

Work schedule: Monday to Friday 0700 -1500. 
Rest days are Saturday and Sunday.
