About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a temporary full-time, relief, Medical Laboratory Technologist to join our dynamic Supply Chain (Production/Distribution) team.

 

The Production team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by processing whole blood collections to the final products and the Distribution team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by performing duties in manufacturing, releasing, and distributing blood products. In this role, you will perform a variety of duties related to the blood and blood product inventories including reviewing and identifying phenotype red blood cell patient specific requirements, transformation as a result of irradiation, washing, freezing or deglycerolizing, product returns and recalls, hospital blood bank customer service, assisting with reviewing and coordinating associated processes, and ensuring standards and records are maintained.

 

Formula for success

  • Leveraging your organizational skills, you will initiate, disposition product, and conclude non-conformance investigations. You will ensure completion within acceptable timelines by reviewing processes, records, documentation, and requesting follow-up as appropriate from other departments or staff in the area. You will enter all findings into EtQ Reliance database, eProgesa and SAP.
  • Utilizing your attention to detail, you will prepare documentation related to production, end labeling, hospital order versus product shipped, inventory, investigations, transformation and recall of blood products.
  • Applying your communication skills, you will prepare inventory data reports, participate in inventory calls and any other teleconference as required. You will provide interpretation of test results to staff as required.
  • Using your analytical skills, you will review documentation and computer records/reports for completeness, standard operating procedure adherence and accuracy of information.
  • Leveraging your collaborative skills, you will assist the Supervisors in the review, preparation and update of new equipment, projects, or procedures for the area, including coordinating validation and implementation.
  • Employing your problem-solving skills, you will respond to specific hospital blood product requests including HLA/HPA matched platelets, and ensure products are available to meet these needs.
  • Utilizing your resource management skills, you will participate in maintaining an adequate inventory of lab supplies for the department.
  • Using your documentation skills, you will support the Supervisors in documenting and monitoring error trends and associated staff re-training.
  • Applying your technical skills, you will assist with ensuring equipment is operating properly, equipment maintenance is complete and documented as required.
  • Leveraging your continuous improvement mindset, you will actively participate in department continuous improvement activities and other duties as assigned.

 

Desired education and skills

  • Meet the eligibility requirement for registration or membership with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) or recognized equivalent.
  • MLT General, Blood Bank, or recognized equivalent in training and/or experience.
  • Related experience as a MLT in the blood transfusion field is an asset.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with others and provide clear communication to team members.
  • Ability to organize workload and set priorities.
  • Ability to operate related equipment, including computerized equipment. 
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the job.
  • Ability to keep abreast of new developments and technology.
  • Ability to work with a strong customer focus.

What you can expect

  • As a relief, the candidate must be prepared to work shifts in coverage of the Technologists. Common shifts are:
    • Tuesday to Friday 0600-1400; Saturday 0700-1500 and Sunday 0800-1600; Monday and Tuesday 0700-1500; Wednesday to Friday 1300-2100; Monday to Thursday 0700-1500; Friday 0615-1415, Monday and Tuesday 1100-1900; Wednesday and Thursday 0700-1500; Friday 0615-1415.
  • Physical requirements for the role include the ability to lift weights up to 10 kg (22 lbs.).


This position must meet the Trustworthiness and Reliability Verification requirements of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and is subject to criminal records and employment verification checks.
