About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular full-time Charge Technologist to join our dynamic Testing team. 

 

The Testing team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by performing routine and extensive testing. These testing services help ensure a safe and secure blood supply that protects donors and recipients. Every unit is tested so we can ensure a safe supply chain to every patient. In this role, you will assist the Manager and Assistant Manager with planning and implementing improvements within the laboratory. You will be responsible for proving supervision to employees assigned to the department with responsibility for scheduling, staff assessment and staff development.

Formula for success

  • Demonstrating strong leadership, you will provide daily supervision of technologists, Lab Assistants and Clerical employees, organizing and assigning work to employees to ensure efficient operation of the laboratory.
  • Exercising strong organizational and problem-solving skills, you will manage staffing logistics including scheduling, coverage, and leave management while maintaining budget compliance and ensuring consistent workflow and service delivery.
  • Employing effective communication and interpersonal skills, you will guide performance by providing feedback and evaluations and maintaining a safe and compliant work environment. You will also contribute to hiring decisions.
  • •Applying your analytical thinking, you will monitor laboratory procedures, review incidents, assess quality control documentation, and implement corrective actions to uphold compliance with operating standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Drawing on your commitment to continuous improvement, you will contribute to audits, recommend process enhancements, support the implementation of new methods and technologies, and help maintain high performance standards across the lab. You will also stay well-versed in laboratory procedures, support secure and accurate task execution, and stay current with evolving methodologies and technologies to ensure operational excellence.
  • Leveraging your coaching abilities, you will support staff development by assessing competencies, guiding performance, contributing to educational programs, and promoting continuous learning through training, and interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Utilizing your attention to detail, you will ensure equipment is properly maintained and quality control procedures are consistently followed, documented, and reviewed to support safe, accurate, and compliant laboratory operations.

Desired education and skills

  • Graduate of an approved Medical Laboratory Technology training program with attained certification by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) is required.
  • Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Manitoba (CMLTM) is required.
  • A minimum of four years experience in a Transfusion Medicine related laboratory, including two years recent supervisory experience, is required.
  • Completion of the ISTP training program is required.
  • Working knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a good command of the English language.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, being able to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities within short time frames.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to exercise sound judgement, tact and discretion when dealing with others, and the ability to promote a team environment.
  • Strong analytical abilities coupled with effective problem-solving skills
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

What you can expect

 

  • Shifts/hours - must be flexible to accommodate assigned shifts which are based on operational needs; length of shifts varies according to the event which takes place at Canadian Blood Services fixed and mobile donor centers. Shifts include days, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays. Will be required to be on call.
  • Physical requirements - ability to lift weight up to 10 kg (22 lbs.).
