About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Temporary Full-time Medical Laboratory Technologist to join our dynamic Testing team.

The Testing team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by performing routine and extensive testing. These testing services help ensure a safe and secure blood supply that protects donors and recipients. Every unit is tested so we can ensure a safe supply chain to every patient. In this role, you will perform routine testing by following operating procedures and recording all related quality control/assurance activities.

Formula for success

  • Drawing on your knowledge and experience in laboratory functions, you will perform blood grouping, phenotype testing, antibody screening, antibody identification for patient and donor samples, and record all testing related quality control/assurance activities.
  • Utilizing your knowledge in testing, you will perform absorptions, elutions, titrations and other specialized serological procedures on complex antibody identification cases including genotyping.
  • Utilizing your attention to detail and organizational skills, you will perform routine maintenance and verification of laboratory equipment in accordance with approved work instructions to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Driven by your commitment to excellence and continued growth, you will maintain technical competency, promote continuous learning and participate in ongoing quality improvement activities.
  • Applying your ability to be proactive and ensure excellence, you will perform routine maintenance of equipment and laboratory areas.

Desired education and skills

  • Graduate of an approved Medical Laboratory Technology training program with attained certification or eligibility for certification by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) is required.
  • Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Manitoba (CMLTM) is required, or eligible to obtain registration. 
  • Minimum 1 year  experience working in a laboratory.
  • Experience with Transfusion Medicine/Red Cell Serology is an asset.
  • Technical skills including Microsoft Word and Outlook, and the ability to learn new systems and programs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent customer services skills.
  • Ability to work accurately with attention to detail, strong organization and time management skills along with excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.

What you can expect

  • Shifts/hours will vary. You must be flexible to accommodate assigned shifts which are based on operational needs. Shifts include days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and statutory holidays. 
  • Physical requirements for the role include the ability to lift weight up to 10 kg (22 lbs.), extended periods (2 or more hours duration) of sitting, standing, and walking.
